Who is tone-on-tone hair coloring for?
Tone-on-tone coloring is ideal for covering your first gray hairs in a very natural way, or if you want to deepen or add nuance to your natural hair color.
If, on the other hand, you have a lot of gray hair and want to cover it up permanently, it would be better to opt for a permanent hair color. Similarly, if you want to change your look and lighten your natural hair color, it’s best to choose a permanent hair color or even a bleaching treatment, both of which are available at Eugène Color (here) or go directly to your colorist (here).
What is the difference between permanent hair dye and tone-on-tone hair dye?
It is important to note that these two types of hair coloring work in the same way; that is, both involve oxidative coloring using a coloring cream mixed with an oxidizing agent.
Typically, tone-on-tone hair color is formulated without ammonia, unlike traditional oxidative hair color, which is a major difference between these two types of hair color.
The second significant difference between permanent hair color and tone-on-tone coloring is how long the color lasts on your hair. As the name suggests, permanent hair color is permanent, and you’ll have to wait for your hair to grow out to return to your natural color or get a new color. In contrast, tone-on-tone coloring lasts only a few weeks—usually between 6 and 8 weeks—and fades gradually.
What are the pros and cons of tone-on-tone hair coloring?
Tone-on-tone coloring offers several advantages:
- It adds beautiful highlights and depth to your hair.
- As mentioned, it helps cover up the first gray hairs.
- It is less permanent than a permanent hair color, as it gradually fades over 6 to 8 weeks.
- There is little to no root regrowth as the color fades, so it requires much less maintenance than permanent hair color.
- Finally, when used with a suitable post-coloring treatment—such as the one developed by the Eugène Color R&D team for the Color&Glow kits—it guarantees intense shine for your hair.
Keep in mind, however, that tone-on-tone coloring won't lighten your hair by more than one shade, which isn't enough if you want to go from brown to blonde.
How do you use a tone-on-tone hair color?
Tone-on-tone coloring is a technique used in hair salons, but it can also be done at home, thanks in particular to the hair coloring kits available on the market. Opt for complete kits that include, at a minimum, gloves and a post-coloring treatment, which will make detangling easier and add shine to your color.
Dyeing your hair tone-on-tone at home is very simple and fairly quick. The Color&Glow hair dye kits (here) are ideal if you have about 30 minutes to pamper yourself and enhance your hair’s highlights. Formulated without ammonia, our hair color cream—with fruity and floral notes—intensifies your natural shade or adds new highlights to your hair. After coloring your hair, don’t forget to apply the sweet almond milk treatment, developed by our lab to strengthen and nourish your hair while giving it intense shine.
